Virtualbox Unsupported Version Of Data Unit Vga

Problem

Virtual Box? virtual machine fails to restore from saved state and instead exits with an error like:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine MyVirtualBoxVirtualMachine. Unsupported version 14 of data unit ‘vga’ (instance #0, pass 0xffffffff) (VERR_SSM_UNSUPPORTED_DATA_UNIT_VERSION). Result Code: E_FAIL (0×80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {8ab7c520-2442-4b66-8d74-4ff1e195d2b6}
Solution

Right-click on the virtual machine in Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager list and select Discard saved state… (ctrl+j), then restart virtual machine.
I had this exact same error today after I did Ubuntu system upgrades which brought down a new virtualbox.
